Abstract:To study the incidence of food poisoning among the countryside residents from Dongying. A household questionnaire survey was conducted to 15?276 residents in 20 villages of Dongying municipality of Shandong Province with a multistage random cluster sampling on their injuries from March 1, 2002 to February 28, 2003. Data were analyzed with SASv8 software,and the standardized incidence had been calculated on the basis of Shandong Province population data in 2000. The food poisoning cases were 36 patients, the crude incidence was 23.566 per million, and the standardized incidence was 22.527 per million. The incidence was higher in men(22 patients) than in women(14 patients). There was only one death among the 36 victims, and the death rate was 65.46 per million. The age of the patients ranged from 16 years to 68 years, and the majority of them aged from 20 years to 59 years. The degree of poisoning was mild in 27 patients, moderate in 6 patients,and severe in 3 patients, of whom 1 patient died. The total cost medical treatment was 5?790 RMB and other expenses amounted to 2?350 RMB. Food poisoning is common among the countryside residents in this area and seriously endangers their health. Therefore, it is urgent to prevent and control food-borne diseases in rural areas.
